FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 18th, 2019
(St. John’s, NL) - Atlantic Light Theatre will launch its 2020 season with 9 to 5: The Musical - an empowering, satirical comedy about friendship and revenge - with music by Dolly Parton. This will be the Atlantic Canadian premiere of the show, which has been delighting audiences around the world.
“It is really exciting for us to bring 9 to 5 to the stage,” said Doug Vaughan, co-artistic director of Atlantic Light Theatre. “The comedy in the show is a big reason for us to stage this production. The writing is brilliant.” Fellow co-artistic director Jacinta Mackey Graham said the show is “a winning mix of great humour and genuinely touching moments.”
9 to 5: The Musical is an outrageous but thought-provoking comedy based on the 1980 hit movie starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton. This musical adaptation is “packed with laughs as big as Dolly [Parton’s] personality,” said Mackey Graham. “There will be knockout performers and a treasure chest of upbeat songs.”
The iconic lead characters will be played by a trio of local stars: Shelley Neville, Sheila Williams and Dana Parsons. “The audience is in for a night of laughter and inspiration,” Vaughan explains. “These women are magical when on stage together.” They will star alongside Justin Nurse and a cast of dozens of Newfoundland and Labrador’s finest talent, all backed by a full orchestra.
“This would make a great Christmas gift,” said Mackey Graham. “It’s a perfect tonic for a winter’s night.”
9 to 5: The Musical runs from January 30th to February 1st, 2020, at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre. Tickets are $68.00 each and are available at artsandculturecentre.com, or by calling 729-3900.
